Why This Blog? Midlife and Loving It!

“Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not;  until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.”
Psalms 71:18

According to the Department of Health & Human Services Administration on Aging, the population, aged 65 and over, will increase from 35 million in 2000 to 40 million in 2010 (a 15% increase) .  Currently it is estimated that 300 people an hour are turning 55 in this country and last year, I joined their ranks.  As such, I’ve decided that as long as I am breathing and until the day I breathe no more, I will do so purposefully, playfully, prayerfully and passionately.  Purposefully, it may be a one-time moment where I extend encouragement through a smile to a sad stranger . . . or a one-time event where I take some cookies to a widowed neighbor and then stay for a chat . . . or perhaps it will be a long-term project where I volunteer at a local soup kitchen, crochet blankets for the homeless, or baby-sit at no charge for a mom who needs a break every so often.  Playfully, it may be riding the motorcycle with my husband on Route 66 from Ohio to California . . . or missing a step or two (or twenty) at a Monday night Zumba class . . .  or standing in a hot air balloon floating over the vineyards of Paris (or maybe just tethered several hundred feet above a country fair) . . . or perhaps it will be playing cards with friends or family on a Friday night . . . or sitting with my grandchild, eating popcorn and giggling at a funny movie.  Prayerfully and passionately, I will approach it all.  Whatever I do, I intend that my “Golden Years” will be a blessing to many and a gratifying one for me.  I want it to be the last stretch of a playful, prayerful, and passionate life . . . purposefully attuned and glorifying God . . .  and I pray it will be so for you as well!  The purpose of this blog is to share occasional thoughts, prayers, and encouraging words with you as we experience this last stretch together, and to hear about some of your thoughts and experiences as well!

Midlife and loving it!  What say you?  Come along for the ride!
